The Privacy Gift Shop is a marketplace for countersurveillance technology, privacy accessories, and new ideas about privacy.
We use ecommerce to normalize otherwise controversial ideas about surveillance and encourage a critical speculative discourse about issues related to data, surveillance, and privacy.
The first pop-up exhibition took place at the New Museum Store on Bowery in September 2013 featuring items from the Stealth Wear collection that were designed to avert thermal surveillance from military drones.
Since launching in 2013, the Privacy Gift Shop has traveled to Hong Kong, Tel Aviv, Vienna, and London to do workshops and exhibit new products an ideas.
In 2015, the Privacy Gift Shop joined NEW INC, the art+tech incubator led by the New Museum in New York City. During this time, the gift shop developed a new approach for combining social entrepreneurship and artistic practice, leading to a new year-long project called Think Privacy.
In 2016 the Privacy Gift Shop temporarily located to Berlin.
The Privacy Gift Shop was founded by Adam Harvey in 2013.
