Business Description

Bardo Farm is an off-the-grid family farm focusing on permaculture using a balance of livestock, gardening, maple sugaring, foraging, forestry, and more.

We raise a broad range of animals and grow a variety of vegetables. Currently, our pigs and chickens rule the farm (the chickens in numbers, the pigs in attitude). But we are always open to introducing new animals and projects.

Our gardens are organic. Our animals are free range, woodland- and pasture-raised, cage-free, and people-friendly due to the attention and love we give them.

Our goal is to raise happy, healthy animals, and we are always seeking ways to improve our methods and their quality of life.

‘Bardo’ is a Tibetan word meaning ‘between lives’, and it has been the goal of the Bardo Project to provide a place where people can pause, reconsider their values and their strengths, and start moving in a direction that is aligned with those.

Bardo is owned and operated by Neil & Emily Smith and Ian & Jody Underwood. The four of us moved to New Hampshire in September 2007. We bought a large property with an off-the-grid house so we could pursue our own “bardo”. We have since started breeding pigs and rabbits and raising calves, turkeys, and chickens.
