The algorithm known as Ethash is a modification of the Dagger-Hashimoto one. The Ethash proof-of-work algorithm is memory-intensive, which was supposed to make it resistant to ASICs. Even after Ethash ASICs were created, GPU mining remained a viable alternative until proof-of-work was disabled. On various non-Ethereum proof-of-work networks, Ethash is still utilized to mine other currencies.
