An activity started by an externally-owned account, or an account maintained by a person rather than a contract, is referred to as an Ethereum transaction. For instance, Jack’s account must be debited and Jane’s account must be credited if Jack transfers Jane a certain amount of ETH. This alteration of state occurs within a transaction.
