Retargeting

What is Retargeting

On proof-of-work blockchains like the one used by Bitcoin, a retargeting algorithm, also known as a difficulty adjustment algorithm, is employed.

On proof-of-work (PoW) blockchains, a miner must solve a challenging series of equations or puzzles in order to create each new block. The difficulty of the problems increases with each new block, though. The conundrum is resolved by miners changing a nonce, which is a unique number used just once, to produce a hash value that is less than the hash goal, which is a prerequisite for every block.
