Astroturfing is the practice of passing off sponsored messages or marketing initiatives as the unprompted opinions of real community members.
Astroturfing has a long history of being a favorite tactic of both political organizations and for-profit corporations. One famous instance is the creation of the fictitious National Smokers Alliance advocacy group by the tobacco industry.
