What is Scrypt

Scrypt is a hashing algorithm that can be used as a substitute for the SHA-256 hashing algorithm used in Bitcoin mining. However, Scrypt mining differs in that it places a greater emphasis on memory than on pure CPU power in an effort to lessen the advantage that ASICs enjoy while enhancing network participation and energy efficiency. Simply put, it is a quicker and simpler algorithm than SHA-256.
